Getting to Essen

Essen is one of the main hubs in the Ruhr area and can easily be reached by train and bus services, such as Flixbus. The closest airport is Düsseldorf Airport (DUS), but Cologne-Bonn (CGN), Dortmund (DTM), or even Frankfurt/Main (FRA) are within easy reach by train as well.

Getting around in Essen

The easiest way to get around in Essen is by using S-Bahn and Underground/tram (operated by Ruhrbahn) – or simply take a walk!

If you fancy a longer trip within Germany, check out the Deutschlandticket (49€-Ticket), which allows you to travel in local trains for one calendar month. Just be careful: it comes as a subscription, so make sure to cancel your subscription (deadline: 10th of each month for the next month).
